Looking Ahead

January is flying by.  I can't believe the school year is half over and we are now into the 2nd semester.  We've had a wonderful year so far, and I know we will continue to grow and learn in each area.  Report cards came home last week.  Let me know if your child did not receive one.
In Social Studies we are just finishing up the Southeast Region of the United States.  I have sent home several maps for your child to practice the states and capitals of this region.  We have a test over the SE Wednesday, January 25.
Basic Skills are just around the corner.  We will be taking them the week of February 6 - 10.  The best way for your child to prepare for them is to get a good night's sleep and to eat a healthy nutritious breakfast.  I'm also asking for parents to please send snacks to share with the class.  Let me know if you can provide snacks for Basic Skills week.  Pretzels, crackers, or trail mix are just a few suggestions.
Parent Teacher Conferences are also coming up. (Feb. 21 and 23)  This time around, I would like the conferences to be student- led.   I would like your child to accompany you to the conference and tell how he/she is doing in class.  I'll be sending home more information closer to conferences.  We will not have school Feb. 24.

Dr. Woody Visits 4H!

We have been studying the human body in science.  We’ve learned some fascinating facts about several body systems, including the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and respiratory systems.
Recently, Dr. Ray Woody, retired veterinarian, visited our class and spoke to us about the cardiovascular system.  He brought along a deer heart and dissected it to show each of the 4 chambers of the heart.  Our students learned about the left and right ventricles, the left and right atrium, the aorta, and how the blood needs to go to the lungs from the heart to get oxygen. He even drew a picture of the heart on the board and explained about the valves of the heart. Fourth graders were able to see first hand the thickness of the left ventricle, how the aorta takes the blood to the rest of the body, and how amazing and important the heart is in our bodies.  We thank Dr. Woody for coming in to our class and teaching us all about the heart.

Fmaily Fun Night

Out Washington Parent is sponsoring a family night Jan. 17.  I will send home more details as I receive them.  I received the following forward from the parent group:

Dear Teachers,

On Tuesday, January 17th we are having our first Family Fun Night.  As part of this event we are having a silent auction.  We have sent letters home with students seeking silent auction donations and the Parent Teacher Group has been soliciting donations from local businesses as well.  In planning this event we sought advice from Pence Pals members as they have a successful event like this each year.  One suggestion they gave us was to have each class come up with a basket for the silent auction.  They indicated these were big hits and did well at the auction.  So we are asking you to brainstorm with your students and come up with a theme for a classroom silent auction basket and then seek donations from parents for the items.  Some ideas are:  movie basket, pet basket, and nail care/pampering basket.

The Parent Teacher Group will award the classroom with the best idea for the silent auction basket.  So have fun with this and please encourage your students and their families to attend this event.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller

I'm wondering if any of you would like to help head up this project?  I would need a letter to go home with ideas for the basket.  We can make copies of the letter for the class.  Any volunteers?

Thanks so much for all you do for your child.  It makes a huge impact in the classroom.
